Nice story. Connected with me in many ways. I wish I could channel my 14 year old me and my young artillery officer me as I prepare for my 3rd 100mile race (read adventure) for the year.
Finally another soldier/runner/writer — I knew there had to be other warrior poets out there! I’m pretty sure those previous versions are still there with you, whether you can specifically identify them or not. Good luck with the 100 - what race?
A 24hour loop race in New Zealand. Going to try and cover 186km in the time. Maybe more if the days ok. Training race #2 of 2 for the Revenant (NZ take on The Barkley Marathons).
So I zoomed out on the Strava track you sent and I see “Bay of Plenty” and it reinforces the idea that I really should visit NZ…. Revenant looks like a mighty challenge.
Wow, great story! Thanks for sharing this. And I obviously like the part with the runner appearing from out of nowhere. :)
Thanks, Nico. I feel like I've probably been that runner for some people I've (unintentionally) startled during a run.
Haha.
Unfortunately, I never really get to run in remote areas.
